Samuel Pennypacker -- governor, jurist and historian -- was born in Phoenixville and educated at the University of Pennsylvania where he studied law. He was called to the bar in 1868 and elected president of the Law Academy of Philadelphia. In 1889, he became judge of the Court of Common Pleas and remained in that post for 20 years. Francis Daniel Pastorius (1651-1719) was a German settler of Colonial Pennsylvania. As the agent for the Frankfort Land Company, he came to Philadelphia in 1683 to purchase land tracts for German settlers. This land was later known as Germantown. In 1708, John Henry Sprogel attempted to dispossess many of the German settlers. Pastorious settled the legal dispute in favor of the settlers.
